Nintendo Switch 2 screen protector: do you need one and how to fit it

Yes, a Nintendo Switch 2 screen protector is worth having if you carry the console around or dock it every day. The top layer of the screen is a plastic film that can scratch, and Nintendo says not to peel it off, so a thin tempered glass guard on top is the simple fix. If your console stays at home and mostly plays on the TV, you may not need one.

Does the Nintendo Switch 2 need a screen protector?

It depends on how you use it. The Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD touch screen (Nintendo), and that's a lot of exposed surface when the console goes in and out of a bag.

Not every console gets marked. In a Nintendo Life reader poll with 3,220 votes, 63% said their screen didn't have a single blemish, while about a quarter reported marks, from very light ones upwards (Nintendo Life). That's a poll of readers, not a lab test, but it's a fair picture: many owners are fine, and some aren't. Notebookcheck also says the plastic layer scratches fairly easily and suggests glass as the easy solution (Notebookcheck).

How you play Do you need a guard? Why
Handheld on the metro, train or flight Yes Bags hold keys, coins, zips and grit
Docked and undocked every day Worth it Some owners blame the dock for fine lines on the film, though these are individual reports
Shared with children or friends Worth it More hands, more fingerprints, more knocks
Stays at home, mostly on the TV Optional Less contact, so less to protect against

What is the film on the Switch 2 screen, and can you peel it off?

Leave it on. Nintendo's manual says the screen is covered with a film layer designed to stop fragments scattering if the screen is damaged, and adds "Do not peel it off" (Nintendo Life).

So the film is a safety layer, not a scratch guard, even though it looks like one. A glass protector goes on top of it. If you can see a scratch or a stray mark on the film, don't try to lift it. Fit your guard over it, or leave it be.

Will a screen protector affect touch on the Switch 2?

A thin guard that's seated properly shouldn't get in your way. The Switch 2 uses a capacitive touch screen (Nintendo), so it reads your finger, not pressure.

If taps stop registering, Nintendo's own fix is a good one to follow. Power the console off, remove any screen protector, clean the screen with a soft, dry, clean cotton cloth, turn it back on and run the touch screen test. Nintendo also says not to use solvents or cleaners of any kind (Nintendo Support).

How do you fit a Nintendo Switch 2 screen protector?

Dust causes most failed installs, so take your time over the first three steps.

  1. Prepare the room. Switch off the fan, wash and dry your hands, and power off the console.
  2. Keep the factory film on. You're fitting the guard over it.
  3. Clean the screen. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, with no sprays or cleaners. Then press the dust-removal sticker across the screen, edges included.
  4. Use the alignment frame. Follow the steps in your kit and don't touch the sticky side of the glass.
  5. Press from the centre out. Let the glass settle, then push small air bubbles towards the nearest edge with the cloth.

A bubble with a speck of dust in the middle won't go by itself. Our guide to choosing and installing a tempered glass screen protector shows how to lift it out.

What should you check before you buy?

  • The exact model. Guards for the original Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite aren't cut for the 7.9-inch Switch 2 screen.
  • Thickness. Thinner glass keeps the feel of the screen close to the original.
  • Rounded edges. 2.5D edges are smoother under your thumb and less likely to catch.
  • An oil-resistant coating. It makes fingerprints easier to wipe away.
  • An install frame. It takes the guesswork out of lining the glass up.
  • What "9H" means. It's a pencil hardness grade that points to resistance against light, everyday scratches. Read more on what 9H hardness actually means.

How else can you keep the screen looking new?

  • Carry it in a case or pouch, away from keys, coins and chargers.
  • Wipe off grit before you dock it. Use a soft, dry cloth.
  • Slide it straight into the dock, without forcing it or tilting it against the sides.
  • Play with clean hands, especially after snacks.

FAQ

Can I dock the Switch 2 with a screen protector on?

Yes. Our guard is made for both docked and handheld play, and at 0.25 mm it adds very little thickness. Line the console up and slide it straight in.

Will a Switch OLED screen protector fit the Switch 2?

No. The Switch 2 has a larger 7.9-inch screen, so buy a guard made for it.

Should I remove the factory film before fitting a guard?

No. Nintendo says not to peel it off. Fit the guard on top.

Will a glass guard stop every scratch and crack?

No. It takes everyday scratches in place of the film, but hard grit can still mark it and a bad drop can crack it. That's the guard doing its job, and it's easier to replace than a screen.
